U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is proposing to suspend the rules which aim to ensure that truck drivers do not work when they are overly tired, saying that there have been unexpected consequences as a result of the regulations which were introduced last year.
However, she is being faced with significant opposition, especially from those who have had direct experience of relatives being killed due to truck drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
They maintain that Collins is being pressured by the trucking industry to try and suspend the regulations, and have called on her to think more about her constituents and overall road safety.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has also criticized Collins saying that before the regulations were originally introduced that the drivers and the industry were consulted and that any change to the regulations would only expose other road users to an increased risk.
