How to Practice Proper Pool Safety

As the United States enters into the hot summer months, more and more children will take to area swimming pools to have a good time. While millions of children and adults go swimming every year without incident, there are nevertheless hundreds of unnecessary fatalities which occur annually as a result of improper pool and swimming area practices. In fact, every year approximately 300 children drown in swimming pools and spas, and the vast majority of these drownings are preventable.

As can be seen in the following video, practicing pool safety is not a matter of doing one thing correctly. Rather, proper pool safety is an attitude which results in using pool and other bathing facilities in accordance with specific safety guidelines.

One of the most important aspects of pool safety, especially as it relates to children, is that children should always be supervised when in and around the swimming pool. Children should never be left to play in the pool alone as the risks are simply too great. Additionally, though playing in the swimming pool is practically the main reason children like to go for a dip in the pool in the first place, parents and those supervising children should remember to limit the roughhousing so as to prevent serious accidents.
