Fatal Crash May be Due to Medical Issue

On Friday afternoon, February 5, a man died after a fatal crash.

According to Metro police, the accident happened shortly after 4.15 p.m. near the intersection of Naples Drive and Polaris Avenue, just south of Harmon Avenue and a block west of The Cosmopolitan. A 61 year old man from West Hills, California was heading south of Polaris towards Naples in a 2000 Chrysler Town & Country when for reasons unknown he swerved to the right, over the sidewalk and hit a light pole and a fence.

Witnesses ran up to help and saw he was in medical distress but even though he was transported to Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center he was pronounced dead.

It is thought that the man may have experienced a medical episode which led to the crash and he has not yet been named by the coroner’s office pending the notification of family members.

Man in Wheelchair Killed by Hit and Run Driver

On Friday night, December 4, a man in a wheelchair died having been hit by a hit and run driver.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened shortly before 8.30 p.m. in the area of Las Vegas Boulevard North and North Walnut Road in northeast Las Vegas. A vehicle was traveling northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard in the left lane when it hit 46 year old Michael Alan Terrell from North Las Vegas who was being pushed by his wife, 44 year old Judith Terrell as they crossed the street outside of a cross walk.

The car did not stop but is thought to be an early 1990s model of a dark colored Nissan sedan and police say that there are vehicle parts at the scene with serial numbers so they are hoping to discover who is responsible for the incident. A new law in Las Vegas makes the crime of hit and run punishable by a minimum of two years in jail.

Terrell died at the scene and his wife was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

This is the 114th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year and the 53rd pedestrian fatality on Clark County roadways this year, one short of the record of 54 fatalities set in 2013.

Pedestrian was Killed and Another Injured

On Wednesday, October 7 a pedestrian was killed and another seriously injured.

According to Metro Police the incident happened at around 7 a.m. on Maryland Parkway near Serene Avenue. Nicole Johnson, aged 31, crossed over Richmar, hit the curb and started driving on the sidewalk. She mowed down two men, hit a wall and then came to a stop in the southbound travel lane.

One man was dragged under the vehicle and the other was thrown when he was hit. The man who died was 78 year old Richard Glen Bryan of Las Vegas and the other gentleman was taken to Sunrise hospital in a very serious condition.

Johnson was uninjured and was arrested for driving under the influence.

Residents have said that people often speed on Maryland Parkway and that there can be a lot of congestion which tends to make drivers frustrated.

According to Metro Police the number of traffic fatalities is now some 18 or 19 more than at the same time last year.

Australian Woman Critically Injured

On Monday, August 31, a young Australian woman was critically injured having been hit by a car in Las Vegas.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the accident happened shortly before 4 a.m. when witnesses said 20 year old Brooke Baldwin did not cross Flamingo Road using a pedestrian crossing bridge but climbed over a block wall barrier to cross the road and not in a crosswalk.

It is thought she was returning to her hotel, Caesars Palace having left Sydney, Australia the previous week and visited Hawaii before arriving in Las Vegas.

Baldwin was hit by a Kia Amanti car being driven by a 64 year old man and was transported in a critical condition to the city’s University Medical Center with a fractured skull. The driver was uninjured.

Last year 50 pedestrians were killed on Las Vegas roads.

The police are continuing to investigate the accident and so far no charges have been filed.

Bicyclist Died of Injuries Following a Crash

On Tuesday, August 11, a bicyclist died of the injuries he sustained in a crash on the Strip the previous week.

According to Las Vegas Metro Police, the accident happened on August 3 in the 3300 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. Matthew Hunt, aged 37 was with another bicyclist and a 23 year old driver in a Ford Mustang was driving behind them on the Strip. The Ford Mustang made contact with Hunt’s bicycle and he was thrown to the ground. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital Trauma with life threatening injuries and has now succumbed to those injuries.

The driver of the Mustang stayed on the scene and cooperated with police and the other bicyclist was not hurt.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled the manner of death as an accident and this accident was the 63rd traffic related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

Man Died in Boating Accident

On Saturday, 25 July a man died in a boating accident on Lake Mohave.

According to officials at Lake Mead National Recreational Area, which is about 90 miles south of Las Vegas, they were called shortly after noon on Saturday to say that a visitor had been injured by a boat propeller near Cactus Cove. It appears that the female operator of the boat, accidently put the boat into reverse and ran over the victim.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife and Arizona Game and Fish responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead and he was later identified as 51 year old Charles Estrada of Mission Viejo in California. The Mohave County Medical Examiner said that the cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries from boat propeller blades.

The National Park Service and Nevada wildlife officials are investigating the incident which is currently being labeled an accident.

It is not yet known whether the boat operator will face any charges.

Hit and Run Crash Leaves Bicyclist Critical

On Friday June 19, a hit and run crash in the north east valley left a bicyclist in a critical state.

According to Metro Police, the accident happened when 52 year old Theresa Melissa Norfolk of Las Vegas was crossing Las Vegas Boulevard North at Cheyenne Avenue at around 11.30 p.m. She was in a marked crosswalk and was hit by a vehicle. The impact threw her onto the concrete median and the vehicle continued north on Las Vegas Boulevard with her black mountain bike stuck underneath the car. The bicycle was later discovered in a desert lot on the north side of Las Vegas Boulevard near Walnut Road. Norfolk was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

The incident remains under investigation and the police have asked for anyone with information to come forward.

Woman in Stolen Car Crashed into a Construction Site

On Thursday morning, May 14, a woman crashed into a construction site and injured two workers.

According to Las Vegas police, the woman was in a stolen Honda sedan and was fleeing from officers trying to stop her for driving on the wrong side of the road and failing to stop at a stop sign just before the crash. They did not provide any more details about the stolen vehicle.

She crashed into the construction site at the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Eastern Avenue at around 3.40 a.m. Thursday morning, and injured two Las Vegas Valley Water District employees.

The men were taken to University Medical Center with several broken bones. The woman was also taken to the same hospital and was booked in absentia for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Wrong Way Accident Kills Two

On Sunday, April 19, two men were killed on the U.S. 95 in a wrong way accident.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident happened on the southbound route, north of the Snow Mountain exit, at around 4 in the afternoon.

David Beckstrand, aged 40, of Las Vegas was driving recklessly in a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban and travelling against the traffic. He collided head on with a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro being driven by 29 year old Michael Phillip Johannsen of North Las Vegas. Both drivers died at the scene. Following the initial collision, the Camaro smashed into a 2015 Subaru Impreza WRX that then struck a semi-truck. The driver of the Subaru, a 34 year old male was taken to University Medical Center with non life threatening injuries and the 51 year old male driver of the semi was not injured.

This was the 19th fatal crash in Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command’s jurisdiction this year.

Two People Critically Injured in Crash

On Saturday, March 21, two people were critically injured in a crash in the southwest valley.

According to police the accident happened shortly before7 p.m. at the intersection of Hacienda Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive. They went on to say that a Mercedes Benz was traveling northbound on Grand Canyon at a high rate of speed. As the car approached Hacienda, a Toyota Corolla was driving westbound on Hacienda and stopped at a two way stop sign at the junction with Grand Canyon.

The Toyota then went into the intersection and collided head on with the Mercedes Benz.

There were three teenagers in the Mercedes and two men in the Toyota. The passenger in the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle. All were taken to University Medical Center with the occupants of the Toyota both in critical condition, whereas those from the Mercedes Benz only received minor injuries.

Police were awaiting results of blood analysis to determine if alcohol was involved in the crash.

All lanes at the intersection of Hacienda Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive were shut down for several hours after the accident and police say they suspect that one or both drivers may have been driving under the influence and they are awaiting the results of blood analysis.
