GM Compensation
As if things couldn’t get any worse for embattled US automaker General Motors, it seems even entire counties are piling on. It was reported earlier this week that the Orange County district attorney’s office in California is filing a lawsuit against GM saying that the company intentionally hid defects in its vehicles in order to deceive customers. To date, nearly 30 million GM vehicles have been recalled around the world with more than 25 million of those being in North America. The vehicles in question have a faulty ignition switch that causes the engines to shut off during operation. The unexpected shut off causes the vehicle’s power steering, power brakes, and air bags to malfunction.
According to reports, there have been at least three and as many as thirteen fatalities that have resulted from car crashes linked to the faulty switches but General Motors officials have said that its own investigation shows that there is no conclusive evidence that would indicate that these deaths were caused by the defective switches. An independent compensation analyst hired by GM announced this week the company’s compensation plan for victims of crashes that were linked to vehicles with the defective parts. The plan would compensate each victim up to $1 million and in some cases more depending on the severity of the injuries sustained in the crashes.
