Bicyclist Injured after Collision With Las Vegas Police Car

A collision between a bicyclist and a North Las Vegas police car this week left the bicyclists injured.

According to witnesses, a marked North Las Vegas police turned on East Owens Avenue and struck a bicyclist on Monday at about 3:15 PM.  Apparently the police car had been traveling southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard, and may have made a second turn when it struck the bicyclist.

The bicyclist was as injured a result of the accident, and was taken to UMC for treatment.  The injuries are said to not have been life-threatening .  The officer involved in the accident was uninjured.

According to North Las Vegas police Officer Chrissie Coon, the department will be conducting an investigation in order to determine exactly what happened during the incident.  Of particular interest will be whether or not the officer driving the patrol car followed proper procedures in the moments immediately preceding the collision with the bicyclist.  Though the investigation into this incident is ongoing, there have been numerous cases in which officers have caused accidents as a result of having not followed proper department protocols.

Las Vegas Moped Accident Kills 2

It is common knowledge that motorcycle accidents are often far more likely to cause serious injuries than car accidents.  This is because, while the body is protected by a car in an automobile accident, in a motorcycle accident the body receives the brunt of the force.  This simple fact makes motorcycle accidents so deadly, and also applies to other leisure vehicles such as mopeds.

In mid-March two men, riding on a moped, were involved in a hit and run accident near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane.  The men, ages 20 and 21, were thrown from the moped and later died as a result of their injuries.  The driver of the truck which collided with the moped continued to drive after striking the men, despite having the moped lodged underneath his truck.  The driver, dragging the moped with him, ran a red light and was hit by a Toyota sedan.  The driver then left his truck and fled the scene on foot.

This tragic situation is an example of the vulnerability a person experiences when they take a ride on a vehicle such as a motorcycle or moped.  When riding one of these kinds of vehicles it is especially important that you pay close attention to your surroundings, especially intersections, before riding through them.

Please be safe when taking to Las Vegas roads. Especially when using a motorcycle or moped, it is imperative that you use caution when sharing the roads with other automobiles.  If you, or anyone you know, has been the victim of an auto accident, call the  law offices of Jolley Urga Woodbury & Little now at (702) 699-7500 or contact us online today.
