Motorcycle Crash Leaves Man Critically Injured

On Monday afternoon a motorcycle crash left a man critically injured.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on Flamingo Road, approaching Escondido Street, near Maryland Parkway. Alvin Willingham, age 58 and his son, 27 year old Justin Willingham were out riding their motorcycles. Neither of them was licensed to drive them. Alvin Willingham was on a 1980 Yamaha motorcycle and travelling west when a 1999 Oldsmobile being driven by Wilbur Ramberg turned left in front of him to turn into a shopping center. He crashed into the vehicle and landed on the roadway and the car spun and stopped.

Willingham was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with a very critical head injury and the car driver suffered minor injuries. Justin Willingham was not involved in the accident and stopped to try and help his father.

East Flamingo was closed in both directions between Maryland Parkway and Algonquin Street while the accident was cleared and the investigation began.

Driver Was Killed After Smashing into Traffic Signal Pole

On Friday driver was killed in a two vehicle accident in Las Vegas.

According to Las Vegas police the accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Sloan Lane. A Nissan 350Z was traveling west on Sahara and was approaching the intersection with Sloan. At the same time a Toyota Prius was turning left at the intersection from eastbound Sahara and hit the left side of the Nissan. The Nissan then slid and smashed into a traffic signal pole on the northwest corner of the intersection. The driver was a 19 year old male from Las Vegas, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The driver of the Toyota, who was a woman in her 30s remained at the scene and reported the incident.

This was the 2nd traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2015.

The crash is still under investigation and so far the identities have not been released.

Man Seriously Injured After Rolling Jeep

On Friday, an accident in Indian Springs sent a man to hospital.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident happened just after 6 a.m. on U.S. Highway 95 near mile marker 124 and Creech Air Force Base, when a Jeep Wrangler rolled onto the right shoulder. No other vehicle was involved.

The driver was male, and his age and identity are not yet known. He was alone in the vehicle. Although seriously injured, he was found to be conscious and talking and was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas by Mercy Air. His current condition is unknown.

The investigation is ongoing to discover why the Jeep rolled, and even though the accident happened off the highway and on the shoulder, the right lane in the area was closed in order to clear debris and remove the vehicle.

Police Helicopter Crashes in Las Vegas

On Wednesday afternoon, two Las Vegas Metro police officers were injured when a police helicopter crashed in a residential area northeast of the city’s downtown area.

According to police, the accident happened just before 5p.m. when the aircraft crashed into the street near the intersection of 21st Street and Bonanza Road.

The officers were taken to University Medical Center with what appears to be non life threatening injuries. Police said that no one was hurt on the ground.

The helicopter was a Hughes 530 which was one of five choppers operated by 22 police department pilots. It was bought in July 2010 by the Metro Police Department, and was completely destroyed following the crash.

According to its website, the Air Support Unit patrols 7,910 square miles of Clark County, including extensive residential areas and downtown Las Vegas. In 2008 the unit responded to more than 14,000 calls, playing a direct role in the arrest of 782 suspects, recovered 392 stolen vehicles and carried out 147 search and rescue missions.

Two Die in Weekend Crash

Early Saturday afternoon, two men were killed and two others were injured in a crash on Valley View Boulevard near Desert Inn Road.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened just after 12.30 p.m. on Valley View and Capella Avenue when a Nissan Altima, which was turning south onto Valley View from Capella and crossing the northbound lanes of S. Valley View Boulevard, was hit on the driver’s side by a Yamaha motorcycle which was travelling north.

The motorcycle and vehicle stayed locked together as they rolled over, and both came to rest in the southbound lanes of S. Valley View Boulevard. The motorcycle driver, 27 year old Michael Don Savery and the driver of the Nissan, 27 year old Everado Jaramilli-Pedrasa were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The passengers in the car, a 30 year old woman and a 19 month old boy, were taken to University Medical Center. The woman suffered minor injuries and police described the child’s injuries as moderate.

According to police, witnesses said the motorcyclist was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed and these were Metro’s 87th and 88th traffic related fatalities for 2014.

Valley View was shut down between Desert Inn and Sirius Avenue for a few hours while police started their investigation.

Child in Serious Condition Following Parking Lot Accident

On Tuesday morning a 2 year old child was hit by an SUV.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened in the Fiesta apartment complex at University Avenue, near South Durango Drive and Peace Way in the west valley just before noon.

The boy was riding his scooter when it appears that he dashed out from between two parked cars in the parking lot and the 50 year old driver of a 2002 Dodge Durango was unable to avoid him, even though he was driving slowly.

The police went on to say that the driver himself called them, and remained on the scene.

The toddler, who had a broken leg and lung injuries, was taken to the trauma unit at University Medical Center in critical condition, although by the evening his condition had been upgraded to serious.

The abuse and child neglect division of Metro police went to the scene to investigate the supervision of the child, although to date it is unclear whether anyone will be facing charges related to the incident.

Scooter Driver Killed in Multi Vehicle Collision

A multi vehicle crash on Thursday near East Sahara Avenue and Fremont Street left a woman dead.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened shortly before 7 a.m. when 38 year Claudia Bustamante of Las Vegas was driving a motorized scooter with another female passenger. A 2000 Honda Civic was travelling southbound on Fremont Street and ran a red light. It was hit by a Toyota Camry   travelling west on Sahara. The Honda then hit the back of a 1996 Ford Explorer on Sahara, which spun and hit the scooter, a 2013 Tao Tao VIP. Finally the Explorer hit a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta.

Bustamente and her passenger were thrown off the scooter and Bustamante was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The passenger on the scooter, a 39 year old woman, had serious injuries and the 32 year old woman driving the Honda Civic as well as a 59 year old man and a woman in the Explorer all suffered minor injuries and were taken to Sunrise Hospital.

The 44 year old female driving the Camry also suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The accident caused the intersection to be closed for around six hours.

Pedestrian Hit by Car and Killed

A pedestrian was killed on Saturday night after he was struck by a vehicle.

According to Las Vegas police, 35 year old Ruben Ruvalcaba from Las Vegas, was hit by a 2002 Cadillac DeVille just before 11 p.m. near the intersection of Howard Hughes Parkway and Sands Avenue.

It appears from statements taken at the scene that Ruvalcaba crossed southbound on Sands but he was not in a crosswalk and in addition he was wearing dark clothing.  He was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of multiple injuries.

The 62 year old male driver of the Cadillac did not leave the scene and nor did he seem to be impaired. He was not arrested.

According to police, this fatality was one of four which happened within a six hour time period in Las Vegas, all of which involved motor vehicle accidents.

 

 

Man Injured by Woman Driver is awarded $855,000

A male driver was gravely injured in a serious automobile accident after another driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of a freeway off ramp and smashed into his car.

A female was driving southbound on Interstate 15 freeway approaching the off ramp to Baxter Road. She was slowing down as she approached the stop sign at the end of the ramp. Meanwhile, the male driver was driving westbound on Baxter Road at 30 mph and was approaching the end of the southbound off ramp. The female driver, who was under the influence of a controlled substance, kept on driving and failed to stop at the stop sign. She drove right into the vehicle being driven by the male driver.

He suffered numerous injuries including excruciating neck pain, back pain and multiple injuries caused by the vehicle’s airbag and he was subsequently awarded $855,000

Pedestrian Killed by Hit and Run Driver

A driver ran a red light on Thursday leading to the death of a pedestrian.

According to Metro police, early on Thursday morning, at around 4.30 a.m., a dark sedan ran a red light at the intersection of Sahara and Eastern avenues. At the same time, according to witnesses, Las Vegas resident, 57 year old Marlon Duane Collins was crossing in a cross walk. The sedan had no headlights and it ploughed into Collins who died shortly afterwards at University Medical Hospital. The driver did not stop.

Police said that they are still looking for both the car, which is said to be a dark colored Nissan Sentra from 2013 or 2014, and its driver. It was last seen heading east on Sahara.

Metro investigated the crash, leading to the closure of the intersection of Sahara and Eastern for around four hours.
