Safe Driving Tips

Every driver and passenger in the United States has a responsibility to make safe driving a priority. We drive in order to get from one point to another and we do so with the intention and desire to arrive at our destinations safely. Safe driving requires following a few tips that will help make for fewer accidents on America’s roads.

  • Wear your seat belt every time you get into a motor vehicle whether you are a driver or a passenger. Seat belts have been proven to substantially reduce the risk of death of severe injury in the event of a motor vehicle accident.
  • Avoid distracted driving. Distracted driving takes many forms such as putting on makeup, talking or texting on a cell phone, or adjusting the radio or a music playing device. Drivers only need to be distracted for a fraction of a second in order to cause an accident. If something like sending an email or text needs to be sent from your cell phone or you need to deal with unruly kids, pull off to the side of the road or into a designated parking area.
  • Drive defensively. Defensive driving includes anticipating dangerous situations and adjusting driving habits to protect your vehicle from being involved in those situations.

Drunk Driver Causes Pileup Auto Accident

There was a five vehicle pileup on Sunday morning at Lake Mead Boulevard and Lamb Boulevard leaving one man critically injured.

Metro police detectives say a Chevy Tahoe driven by Fajardo J. Guadalupe, aged 34, was heading east on Lake Mead when he ran a red light, hitting an Oldsmobile Ciera that was northbound on Lamb. The Oldsmobile was then pushed into a Hyundai Sonata and a Nissan Armada that were stopped at a red light on Lake Mead. The driver of the Oldsmobile, who was a 34 year old man from Henderson, was taken to University Trauma Center with critical injuries. No other injuries were reported.

According to the police, Guadalupe then continued to drive after the collision and went on to hit a Cadillac Escalade before his vehicle eventually stopped. He then tried to flee on foot but was caught by a LVMPD patrol officer who happened to be at the scene.

Guadalupe was given a field sobriety test, which he failed, and he was then arrested for felony DUI with bodily harm and felony hit-and-run.

Racing Vehicles Leave One Man Seriously Injured

Early Saturday afternoon, at around 1.30 p.m., there was a three vehicle crash on East Sahara Avenue west of South Caravelle Street.

According to investigators, following a review of the evidence and witness statements, it appears the crash occurred due to street racing.

They went on to say that the accident involved a black Mazda, being driven by Maneeraj Songmuang, aged 21, a silver Mazda driven by Kai Thorsted, aged 32, and a red Nissan, driven by 23-year-old Tyler Manning. The three cars were racing east on Sahara and as they approached Caravelle, the passenger side of the black Mazda struck the left rear of the silver Mazda which then spun and stopped. However, the impact of the collision led to the black Mazda colliding with another vehicle, a gray Toyota Tundra, which caused the black Mazda to roll onto its roof.

Songmuang, the driver of the black Mazda, was seriously injured and was taken to University Medical Center Trauma Hospital. Police went on to say that although the red Nissan was not involved in the crash, it was also racing.

The Toyota driver, a 41 year old man, was not racing and neither he, nor a 7 year old boy in the truck, suffered injuries.

Investigators said that, depending on the final investigation report, the three drivers who were racing may face prosecution.
