Las Vegas Man Killed in Rollover Accident

As a result of a rollover accident on Tuesday morning on U.S. 93 northbound, a Las Vegas man was killed.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, just before 3 a.m., a black 2005 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Dexter Henry, 30, was traveling on northbound U.S. 93 passing mile marker 3 in Lincoln County.

Troopers say Henry allowed the pickup to drift right, and then steered the vehicle to the left, back onto the road. The pickup then crossed the centerline and Henry overcorrected, steering to the right causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise, cross the northbound lane and end up on the gravel shoulder where it skidded and then overturned.

Henry, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown clear of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 4:50 a.m.

This marks Nevada Highway Patrol-Southern Command’s 42nd fatal accident for 2014.

Robot Car Unveiled in Las Vegas

According to Franck Cazenave, the marketing director for Bosch, 90% of all accidents are caused by human error, so the move towards the robot car, as demonstrated at the Global Consumer and Electronics show in Las Vegas, is the center of interest.

The technology for the self parking car as seen at the CES, has been developed by Swedish car manufacturer Volvo and French parts maker Valeo, and although it is still at the prototype stage it could be available within six years.

It now seems as if we are getting closer to the robot car and as cars begin to talk to each other and react to what is going on around them there are all sorts of benefits, not only less accidents. Traffic should run more smoothly which will lead to massive fuel savings.

Cazenave went on to say that travel will become much more comfortable with drivers having time to themselves, as they won’t have to drive anymore. They can have a nap, read or even surf the web.

Youngsters will make better drivers

Sheriff Doug Gillespie from Clark County has said that he is pleased that fatal auto accidents have fallen by nearly 20 percent during the first six months of this year in Southern Nevada.

Speaking at a meeting of the Southern Nevada Traffic Safety Committee, he said that however there continued to be too many motorcycle accidents usually involving two different age groups.

In the 18 to 25 year old age group of motorcyclists, the accidents were usually due to travelling at too high of a speed or reckless driving, and in the other main group, 45 to 55 year old motorcyclists, alcohol was usually a key factor in the crashes.

He went on to say that in his opinion education was the key and children should learn the elements of safe driving before they even learned to drive and should ensure that their parents had good driving habits. He actually thought that kids today would make better drivers than their parents as they had had more education on the subject, in that they knew the dangers of drinking and driving.

California District Attorney to File Lawsuit Against General Motors

GM Compensation

As if things couldn’t get any worse for embattled US automaker General Motors, it seems even entire counties are piling on. It was reported earlier this week that the Orange County district attorney’s office in California is filing a lawsuit against GM saying that the company intentionally hid defects in its vehicles in order to deceive customers. To date, nearly 30 million GM vehicles have been recalled around the world with more than 25 million of those being in North America. The vehicles in question have a faulty ignition switch that causes the engines to shut off during operation. The unexpected shut off causes the vehicle’s power steering, power brakes, and air bags to malfunction.

According to reports, there have been at least three and as many as thirteen fatalities that have resulted from car crashes linked to the faulty switches but General Motors officials have said that its own investigation shows that there is no conclusive evidence that would indicate that these deaths were caused by the defective switches. An independent compensation analyst hired by GM announced this week the company’s compensation plan for victims of crashes that were linked to vehicles with the defective parts. The plan would compensate each victim up to $1 million and in some cases more depending on the severity of the injuries sustained in the crashes.
